🌿【Rainforest Reflections】From Red Wine to Redemption: What Lei Jun (雷军) Might Teach Us About Leadership in 2025

🌿 From Red Wine to Redemption:

Will 雷军 (Lei Jun) Serve Baijiu or Benevolence?

📍 A reflection sparked by a weekend encounter with nature, family—and unexpected political royalty at Mandai’s newest gem.

Over the weekend, I brought my family to explore the enchanting Rainforest Asia at Mandai—Singapore’s latest marvel in conservation and ecological education. Amid lush greenery and curious creatures, we were blessed with a surprise encounter: Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Madam Ho Ching, accompanied by their grandchildren. 🧑🌾🇸🇬

A weekend walk at Rainforest Asia, Mandai with my family—where we met Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Madam Ho Ching enjoying quality time with their grandchildren. In the heart of nature, I was reminded that even the most powerful are, at heart, guardians of legacy. And that perhaps… grace is the greatest legacy of all.

As we strolled under the canopy of nature’s wisdom, I couldn’t help but reflect on a story from the tech world—a tale of ego, endurance, and eventual empathy.

It involves a bottle of red wine. A humble Chinese entrepreneur. And a mighty Korean chaebol.

🔙 A Flashback to the Mid-2010s

Xiaomi (小米) was a rising force in consumer electronics. At its helm, Lei Jun (雷军) was preparing to scale globally, but hit a wall—a dependence on AMOLED screens, which were monopolized by a Korean technology giant.

To secure supplies, Lei Jun personally flew to Korea. He wasn’t just pitching a deal—he was trying to protect the jobs of his team, the future of his company, and the hope of his mission.

But what awaited him was no business negotiation.

It was humiliation.

As the story goes, Lei Jun was allegedly forced to down five bottles of red wine—a twisted show of dominance by the chaebol. They never intended to support Xiaomi. The entire episode was a power play, fueled by arrogance.

And so Lei Jun left empty-handed, but not defeated.

📈 The Rise of 小米 (Xiaomi)

Instead of folding, Lei Jun and his team pivoted.

They diversified supply chains. They improved in-house capabilities. They persevered.

Fast forward to 2025, and Xiaomi has grown into a global tech leader, spanning mobile, IoT, EVs, and green innovation.

And the mighty chaebol?

They’re now flying to China… seeking support from the very company they once mocked.

🤔 What Would 雷军 (Lei Jun) Do?

Now that the roles have reversed, here’s the real question:

Would Lei Jun serve them five bottles of Baijiu, asking them to taste the bitterness of past humiliation?

Or…

Would he choose the path of virtue, of the 5,000-year-old Chinese principle “以德报怨”—to repay resentment with kindness?

🗳️ Your Vote Matters

If you were Lei Jun, what would you do?

  1. 🥃 Baijiu of Retribution – Let them feel what they once made you feel.
  2. 🌱 Virtue of Civilization – Show them how true leaders rise above vengeance.

⚡ Bonus Tale from the EV Frontier

Remember 2017?

Tesla was on the verge of collapse. The traditional automotive world was circling like vultures. Elon Musk’s vision was ridiculed. Western investors backed away.

Then came a white knight from the East.

Not from Korea. From China.

China didn’t just support Tesla out of sympathy. It saw alignment. Jobs created. Pollution reduced. Hope sparked. And a factory in Shanghai later became Tesla’s most efficient production site.

This is not coincidence. It reflects a philosophy deeply rooted in harmony and mutual benefit.

🌏 Ancient Civilization. Modern Wisdom.

Too often, we think short-term: “Get even. Save face. Win today.”

But the true leaders of the future will act with a long view, rooted in cultural values that prioritize cooperation over domination, and contribution over conquest.

Just like nature in the rainforest, it’s not the tallest tree that thrives alone—but the ecosystem that survives together.
