#99 🌏When Systems Fail but People Don’t: Is Mastercard Still for Asia — and How SMDC Became the Saving Grace of the Week 🌏

By Mar Vin Foo 胡马宾 | Top Voice in Corporate Sustainability

Asia is one of the world’s most dynamic and demanding regions for digital payments and business operations. Many global brands claim to be “for Asia,” and Mastercard has long ridden on this narrative.

But a series of lived experiences — including those from readers and SMEs — raised a deeper question:

Is Mastercard still aligned with Asia’s needs, expectations, and pace?

Fortunately, the week ended with a powerful counterbalance: SMDC, whose leaders demonstrated what true Asian professionalism and hospitality look like.

This is the full story.

1. A Reader’s Real Crisis: Mastercard Cannot Pay for Microsoft 365

One SME business owner messaged me in frustration.

He tried paying for his Microsoft 365 subscription using Mastercard — the transaction was rejected repeatedly. No explanation. No workaround.

He switched to Visa, and it worked instantly.

His words stayed with me:

“Imagine if Mastercard was my only card. My business would have been stuck for no reason.”

This is a serious concern.

Microsoft 365 is a mission-critical tool for entrepreneurs, consultants, and SMEs. If a business owner cannot pay — not because he lacks funds, but because Mastercard isn’t accepted — then it raises existential risk.

In business continuity planning, a payment failure is still a failure.

It reminds all entrepreneurs:

Always have alternatives — Visa, Alipay, PayPal, bank transfers.

Never rely on just one network.**

Asia moves fast. Payment networks must keep up.

2. Jewel Changi Airport: Flawed Promotion, Outstanding Staff

Mastercard’s exclusive promotion for Singapore Citizens at Jewel Changi Airport required payment via Mastercard.

I attempted it repeatedly — for over 30 minutes, the system failed.

But the Jewel staff deserve praise: They were gracious, patient, and resourceful, ensuring we still had a positive experience despite the broken redemption process.

Once again:

Human touch can triumph over flawed systems.

Love the privileges, but not quite the payment experience. (Source: getyourguide.com)

3. BreadTalk App: Still Not Seamlessly Integrated

My Citi Cashback Mastercard could not be used to top up the BreadTalk app. I had to demonstrate the repeated errors to the cashier. She ended up manually applying the discount.

These breakdowns aren’t mere inconveniences — they erode trust in the reliability of Mastercard’s integrations.

4. Internal Feedback: The Topic No One Talks About Publicly

Multiple readers — including a mentee from the NTUC PME Mentorship Programme — privately shared the same sentiment:

“Mastercard’s internal culture is toxic.”

If true, it may explain the external inconsistencies.

Culture → execution. Execution → customer experience. Customer experience → brand survival.

5. Singtel iServ+: A Design Flaw That Turned Hazardous

At iServ+, tapping the screen for a queue number produced no response. Why? Because the printed numbers were released at shin level — completely invisible.

Meanwhile, the counter officers had to press “next number” repeatedly to clear unintended prints.

A battery even dropped near my children because the workspace was cramped and poorly organized.

This is not a staff issue. This is a design failure that could potentially hurt people.

It’s good to be a Singtel vendor with manageable to easy expectations.

6. Leadership Missteps: The David Neo Incident

MG David Neo, former Chief of Army and current SAF Volunteer Corps Commandant, was filmed insulting Hong Kong’s soccer team and its fans after Singapore’s 2–1 win.

A reader commented:

“His MP career is finished. Next stop: SMRT to retire.”

It reminded me of my earlier article: https://marvinfoo.com/2025/10/06/david-vs-goliath-on-the-mrt-and-why-leadership-matters-more-than-titles/

The pattern is familiar:

Military habits do not always translate well into civilian settings.

Humility, diplomacy, and cultural intelligence matter in Asia’s connected world.

David Neo, a highly decorated former Chief of Army having a tough time adjusting to civilian life. He is not the first and definitely not the last. There is always SMRT as a backup plan.

7. Saving Grace: Meeting the Good People of SMDC

Amidst these frustrations, I met May Glodoviza, Lisa, and Floraida Vallespin from SMDC — and the contrast was stark.

Their:

  • Professionalism
  • Warmth
  • Preparedness
  • Humility
  • Deep understanding of Asian values

…were a masterclass in how business should be done.

Clockwise: SMDC and ERA representatives, Floraida Vallespin and Lisa

They represent SM Investments Corporation, the first Philippine conglomerate to surpass ₱1 trillion in market capitalization, with businesses across:

  • Retail (零售) — The SM Store
  • Banking (银行) — BDO
  • Property (财产) — SMDC

Their slogan speaks for itself:

“SMDC — Home of the Good Guys.

8. A Founder Who Rose from Poverty to Build a Conglomerate

Their founder, Henry Tan Chi Sieng Sy Sr.

  • Born into poverty in Jinjiang, Quanzhou
  • Built the largest retail empire in the Philippines
  • Achieved a net worth of USD 19B
  • Dominated Forbes’ Richest Filipino ranking for 11 consecutive years
  • Ranked #52 globally

A true reflection of 华侨 resilience and discipline.

9. The Philippines: A Market Poised for Ascent

The data presented by SMDC was compelling:

  • 2024 tourism revenue: ₱760.50B
  • 2024 international arrivals: 5.95M (+9.15%)
  • 2028 projected arrivals: 11.5M with a 120,000-room shortfall
  • 2024 GDP growth: 5.8%
  • 2025 GDP projection: 6%–6.2%
  • 2030 GDP: USD 1 trillion, population 128M
  • 2050 ranking: 16th largest economy

Later, over Japanese food and beer, we exchanged ideas about ASEAN dynamics, sustainability, M&A, and more.

It was during this conversation that I shared something significant.

10. The Thousand Ships Revelation — 12 September 2024

On 12 September 2024, I received a spiritual revelation:

“A Thousand Ships, A Future for All.”

A calling to build a fleet of self-sustaining, waste-cleaning ocean vessels to:

  • Reverse plastic pollution through pyrolysis
  • Protect communities from rising seas
  • Serve as floating sanctuaries during extreme climate events
  • Ensure humanity’s continuity in uncertain times

This vision has guided my mission ever since. When I shared it with the SMDC team, they listened with respect and understanding — something rare.

11. Heritage, Surname, and the Silence of Minorities

One of my mentees confided in me:

“I’m afraid to tell people my surname is Chiang 蒋. We were on the losing side of China’s civil war. People judge.”

His fear was real — and I understood it deeply.

Because I, too, come from an ostracized minority surname group, the 胡 (Hu / Hwu / Foo / Aw / Oh / Ow) clan, whose history has been sidelined and erased in Singapore.

I documented this injustice here:

🔗 The Systematic Erasure of the 胡 Clan https://marvinfoo.com/2025/03/11/unveiling-the-systematic-erasure-of-the-胡-clan-in-singapore/

🔗 Surname Power & Representation in Singapore’s Elite https://marvinfoo.com/2025/08/20/64⚖️-surname-power-representation/

Heritage carries pain and silence — but also strength and identity.

12. Is Mastercard Still for Asia?

After seeing:

  • Mastercard rejected for critical business subscriptions
  • Failed promotions
  • Broken app integrations
  • Poor design decisions
  • Leadership missteps
  • Cultural disconnects

…we must ask:

Is Mastercard truly prepared for Asia’s future?

Because Asia will not slow down for outdated systems.

13. Closing Thoughts — And Why SMDC Was the Saving Grace

This week reminded me of one truth:

Systems fail.

Technology fails. Policies fail. But good people do not fail.**

The Jewel Changi Airport staff showed grace. My readers shared honesty. My mentees showed vulnerability. And the leaders from SMDC demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and warmth.

In a world where organisations stumble, it is the Good Guys — like SMDC — who keep hope alive.

Top Voice

Mastercard

Microsoft 365

(Business Continuity Risk)

Microsoft 365

2. Jewel

Jewel

5. Singtel iServ+

Singtel iServ+:

(Design Failure)”

https://marvinfoo.com/2025/10/06/david-vs-goliath-on-the-mrt-and-why-leadership-matters-more-than-titles/

  • May Glodoviza
  • Lisa
  • Floraida Vallespin

(The SM Store)

“SMDC — Home of the Good Guys.

(Henry Tan Chi Sieng Sy Sr.)

  • 国际游客:5.95M(+9.15%)

**“A Thousand Ships, A Future for All.”

Hwu/Foo/Aw/Oh/Ow

https://marvinfoo.com/2025/08/20/64⚖️-surname-power-representation/

Microsoft 365
  • App

Mastercard

SMDC — Home of the Good Guys.
