#66 🌏 Reinventing Roles and Reskilling for the AI Economy 为 AI 经济重塑角色与再培训

On 21 August 2025, I attended the session “Reinventing Roles and Reskilling for the AI Economy”, presented by SGInnovate and the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF).
The discussions shed light on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming not just technology, but the very nature of work itself.

🔹 AI as Empowerment, Not Replacement
As Lai Yit Khai, Assistant Director at SGInnovate, reminded us, “AI is about empowerment, not replacement.”
In just two years from Year 2023 to Year 2025, AI and Machine Learning leapt from being ranked #10 to #1 in terms of critical technologies shaping industries.
This surge has created new roles such as:
- AI Engineer / Machine Learning Engineer
- AI Scientist / AI Researcher
- Computer Vision Engineer
Scholarships and structured pathways are being developed to grow this talent pool—ensuring Singapore’s workforce remains globally competitive.
🔹 The Urgency of Job Redesign
Kelvin K. highlighted that disruption is no longer on the horizon; it is already here.
📊 World Economic Forum – Future of Jobs Report 2025
- 39% of skills will be disrupted within the next 5 years
- 63% of employers say skills gaps are a major barrier to business transformation
- 85% of employers plan to upskill their workforce by 2030
The takeaway? 👉 Job redesign is no longer optional. It is the lever to attract, retain, and empower employees while aligning workforce capabilities with evolving business goals.
SNEF’s consulting approach involves diagnosis and design, ensuring that the end result is not just efficiency, but enriched job roles.
🔹 Support for Enterprises
Through the Productivity Solutions Grant – Job Redesign (PSG-JR) scheme, more than 600 organisations have benefited from consultancy support. Enterprises can:
- Engage pre-approved job redesign consultants
- Tap on funding support to defray consultancy costs
Approved applications span businesses of all sizes:
- 156 projects from firms with 1–9 employees
- 201 projects from firms with 10–30 employees
- Even enterprises with >200 employees have had 53 approved projects
This demonstrates that no company is too small, or too large—to reinvent roles for the AI economy.
✅ 12 Pre-Approved PSG-JR Consultants include:
Aon, BDO Singapore, CET Global Pte Ltd, Cadence HR Consulting, EY, EON Consulting & Training, Mercer, NTUC LearningHub, SFIC Institute, Singapore Polytechnic, LiT Strategy, and KLC International Institute.
🔹 Building Career Pathways
Bing Shun Lim emphasized the role of Career Conversion Programmes (CCPs) in enabling workers—especially mid-career PMETs—to transition into emerging AI-driven roles.
This structured support ensures both employers and employees can embrace transformation with confidence.
🔹 Final Reflection
AI is not about automating people out of jobs; it is about augmenting human potential.
By leveraging AI to handle repetitive and data-intensive tasks, professionals can focus on strategy, creativity, and critical thinking.
The question for businesses is no longer “Should we reskill?” but “How fast can we redesign roles to remain future-ready?”
💡 The time to act is now.
👉 What are your thoughts? How is your organisation preparing for AI-driven job transformation?
P.S: I am glad to see younger generation of presenters at this event accompanying Stephen Yee, Assistant Chief Executive, SNEF for his opening keynote address. Your time has arrived.
