🙋‍♂️💕🌿 [MENTORSHIP | GROWTH | WELLNESS]

🙋‍♂️💕🌿 [MENTORSHIP | GROWTH | WELLNESS]

It was an inspiring afternoon at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Uplift Mentorship Mid-Event Huddle (27 Mar 2025), where we gathered to reflect, re-align, and uplift one another through shared experiences. Grateful to the amazing panel of speakers who brought their authentic selves to the table:

Emily Tan, NUS; Issac Ong, Nano-star and Marianne Sheila, Lundbeck

Emily Tan (Moderator, Career Advisor, Faculty of Science) steered the conversation with empathy and insight.

Issac Ong (Director, Nano-star) spoke about balancing entrepreneurship and family, and how his daughter’s birth shifted his perspective on purpose and patience.

Marianne Sheila, PhD (Regional Medical Science Liaison, Lundbeck) emphasized the value of mentorship in navigating career pivots and embracing vulnerability with courage.

The session underscored several key takeaways:

1️⃣ Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The best mentors are those who are willing to share both success and struggle.

2️⃣ Listening is a powerful skill—one that builds bridges, not just networks.

3️⃣ Mentorship is a two-way journey; mentees, too, bring value through curiosity, drive, and fresh perspectives.

4️⃣ Wellness matters—both mentally and physically. Take care of yourself so you can support others better.

👔 On a personal note, I’ve been privileged to mentor Zhen Rong Chiang (蒋镇荣) through the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) U PME Mentorship Programme. One memorable moment was when he impressed a startup founder (running an hourly handyman platform) with his ability to listen intently—a skill that is far too underrated.

📍 Beyond careers, we explored our shared Chinese heritage and how cultural identity plays a role in shaping our aspirations. It reminded me that mentorship, at its best, is also human connection at its purest. Interestingly, his family Chiang, 蒋 (Jiang) is missing from Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Association (SFCCA), which makes it difficult for him as well as others to trace their roots and heritage.

🌿 I certainly hope we can be more inclusive regardless of history. We have pressing things to deal with for our future generations and we need to be united.

📢 Big shoutout to ATOMY for being a safe and uplifting space where we exchange ideas and remind each other of the importance of wellness and purpose.

Let’s continue to grow, uplift, and walk this journey together.
