Beyond Partnerships: Where Growth Comes Next #168
Beyond Partnerships: Where Growth Comes Next #168
I had the privilege of attending the SMEICC Conference Series 2026, organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI).
The conference reinforced that we are navigating a world that is increasingly fragmented, geopolitically contested and being reshaped by AI. Yet amidst these challenges, ASEAN continues to stand out as a region of opportunity, supported by its growing middle class, digital integration and long-term economic potential.

Minister Hong Tat Chee shared how Singapore is supporting businesses and workers to adapt, transform and internationalise. Equally important is the ongoing effort to identify and remove unnecessary barriers that prevent genuine SMEs from scaling with agility.
Mr Kho Choon Keng (高泉庆) highlighted the prevailing business sentiment: companies remain concerned about rising costs, manpower constraints and the uncertainties surrounding business transformation. Yet despite these challenges, many continue looking beyond Singapore, with Southeast Asia remaining a key destination for growth.
One of the most memorable sessions was Professor Kishore Mahbubani’s discussion on global geopolitics. His reminder was simple yet profound: nations and businesses must remain open to learning from others. History shows that progress slows when we stop exchanging ideas and embracing change.
The emphasis on the Green Economy also resonated strongly. As climate risks become more pronounced, the transition towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient future is no longer optional. It is a journey we all need to undertake together, even without a perfect roadmap.
Many of these themes closely align with what we are building at The Thousand Ships and iMerv Digital Pte Ltd connecting trusted partners across ASEAN, enabling cross-border collaboration, and advancing sustainable infrastructure and circular economy initiatives.
My sincere thanks to SCCCI, the distinguished speakers and everyone I had the opportunity to meet. Beyond the insightful discussions, the conversations and new connections made throughout the event were equally valuable.
The future may not come with a clear roadmap, but it certainly offers opportunities for those willing to learn, collaborate and build together.
