The Legacy of Yan and Huang: Are We Still Living Their Ancient Rivalry Today?

At the dawn of Chinese civilization lies a legendary contest: the struggle between Emperor Yan (炎帝) and Emperor Huang (黄帝).

A contrast of rulers from ancient Chinese history between Yan 炎 and Huang 黄 from inception. Is Singapore reliving history yet again?
  • Yan embodied the agricultural way of life, emphasizing land, farming, stability, and sustenance.
  • Huang represented order through warfare, organization, and systems of governance.

History tells us that Huang triumphed at the Battle of Banquan, establishing himself as the common ancestor of the Huaxia people.

But let’s pause and reflect—what if Yan was also a victor? Otherwise, why do we still call ourselves Descendants of Yan and Huang (炎黄子孙), and not “Huang and Yan”?

Yan’s legacy and bloodline were never extinguished; instead, they stood side by side with Huang’s, shaping the roots of the Chinese people together.

Modern Chinese surnames can be traced back to these two ancient tribes.

  • Chen, Hu, Yao often stem from Yan’s lineage.
  • Li, Huang, Wu are frequently linked to Huang’s.

If we were to map today’s Chinese surnames between Yan and Huang, we would see a living tapestry of coexistence spanning thousands of years.

Looking at Singapore’s modern history, one cannot help but notice parallels.

Could it be that the age-old struggle of Yan and Huang continues to play out in subtle ways on Singaporean soil?

Signs of Political Transformation

Today, nearly half of Singapore’s Members of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers are stepping down. This marks a dramatic shift that could reverberate across state-owned enterprises and government-linked institutions.

At the same time, we’ve seen announcements of waves of interns entering the government sector.

On the surface, this looks like talent renewal.

But could it also signal that half of the political class tied to certain family alliances are being phased out—perhaps even to weaken the Huang family (Ng/Wong) and its allies?

The Question for the Future

👉 When we call ourselves “Descendants of Yan and Huang,” who was the true victor?

👉 Does the Hu (Foo) lineage belong to Yan, or to Huang?

In the next issue, I will take you into the modern story of the “Huang family (Ng).”

In Singapore’s political, military, and business landscape, the Ng family appears to have woven a vast network—from defense and security to multinational tech and state-linked enterprises—almost everywhere.
