Dialogue with Mr. Chua Chong Kheng, Deputy Chief Executive of Land Transport Authority (LTA)

Do you know Singapore’s North-East rail line, which was completed in the Year 2003 is the first driverless train line in the world?

#Transportation is the backbone of the economy and a social mobility enabler too.” Mar Vin, Foo 🌿🪟

Dialogue session with NUS undergraduates by Mr. Chua Chong Kheng and team from LTA

In Singapore and developed cities, public transportation is highly efficient and city-dwellers take it for granted at times.

Transportation allows people to be mobile not just physically but socially too. People move up the economic ladder by being able to perform jobs at places away from their hometowns.

I’m glad to be in the company of Mr. Chua Chong Kheng, Deputy Chief Executive, Ms. Selina Oh and Mr. Wong Wen Kang, who shared the key milestones of Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore and how work is never dull as they plan, design, implement, asset manage, upgrade and maintain our transport systems.

Singapore has grown many folds and we are reaching land capacity for roads. Land transportation is the 3rd highest contributor to carbon in Singapore.

#Sustainability is important and rail is by means the best way to improve mobility while reducing the carbon footprint from our vehicle population. LTA has even returned roads for more effective land use. Electrification and environmental friendly technologies are also underway across the different transport modes like buses.

The session is insightful as multi-disciplinary #careers can be achieved in one organization from electrical, civil and mechanical engineering to computing.

Safety and procurement are paramount. Staff are rotated around to become holistic in both their learnings and applications at work in addition to their core responsibilities.

I once served the Land Transport sector as a system integrator for close to a decade and was delighted to be invited to this special #dialogue with LTA’s senior leaders.

Singapore’s future is bright as we overcome our high density challenges with tunnel burrowing and keeping the lights on with the renewal of ageing yet well-maintained rail and infrastructure assets.

It’s a thankless job but we know our engineers deserve the thumbs up and the pat on their backs for touching our lives on a daily basis from bus-stops, traffic lights, trains and many more.

I certainly hope the dialogue inspired more to join the ranks to serve and impact society from a transportation angle. #Scholarships are available too!

A lot more was shared with the candid exchange during #networking but I guess I will just stop here. In essence, we just have to remember that our lives are improving because of our ability to travel conveniently and efficiently.
