Some business conversations take an hour. Others take only a few minutes. Both can create meaningful opportunities.#164
Yesterday, I attended two very different events: SIGEP 2026 and the SME Cybersecurity Symposium with ST Engineering.
SIGEP brought together businesses exploring franchising, food, hospitality, technology and regional expansion. The cybersecurity symposium focused on a different but increasingly essential question: how SMEs can grow without overlooking operational resilience, data protection and the systems supporting their businesses.
Across both events, I was reminded that the value of networking is not determined solely by the length of a conversation.
A brief exchange can uncover a shared market, introduce a new capability or reveal a problem worth solving. A more in-depth discussion allows both parties to understand motivations, assess compatibility and identify whether there is a practical basis for collaboration.

The best returns often come when we know how to distinguish between the two.Not every introduction needs an immediate proposal. Some conversations should simply open a door. Others deserve structured follow-up, clearer expectations and a pathway towards execution.
For me, the most useful conversations yesterday touched on areas including:
regional market expansion and franchising;
food, hospitality and distribution;
workforce and operational technology;
AI-enabled process improvement;
certification, compliance and cybersecurity resilience;
cross-border partnerships between Singapore and the Philippines.
The common thread was not any single industry. It was the importance of connecting the right people, capabilities and markets at the right stage.
Events create the initial encounter. The real work begins afterwards—qualifying the opportunity, understanding each party’s interests and determining whether the conversation can develop into a trusted and commercially meaningful partnership.
Grateful to everyone who shared their perspectives, however brief or in-depth the conversation may have been.Sometimes the shortest conversation opens the biggest door. The deeper conversation determines whether we should walk through it together.
